Zombie Readiness Society: Field Report August 11, 2026

The Quiet Ones

Agent: River
Classification: Mission Complete
Location: Bayou Sector 7 – South Louisiana

The report arrived on Director Alistair’s desk just after sunrise. Three pages. Mud stains. One coffee ring. River’s reports were rarely tidy. They were too busy being useful.

Our assignment sounded routine. Investigate reports of unusual movement near an abandoned fishing camp deep in the Louisiana bayou. The locals had described strange figures standing among the cypress trees after sunset. Some assumed they were trespassers. Others blamed shadows. One caller simply said,

“They’ve been standing there all night.”

When we arrived, something immediately felt wrong. Birds had gone quiet. The breeze had disappeared. The only sound came from water dripping off the trees.

Fresh footprints led toward the camp. The remains of a campfire suggested someone had left only minutes before. Then we saw them. Three zombies. Completely motionless. Watching the trail. Watching us. One of the newest cadets reached for a flare.

I quietly lowered their arm. “Not yet.”

Sometimes survival isn’t about being the fastest. It’s about being the most observant. We backed away without drawing attention. Moved to higher ground. Watched. Took notes. Radioed headquarters.

Within minutes we learned the zombies weren’t guarding the camp. They were reacting to sound. Had we charged in, we would have attracted every infected creature within earshot.

Instead…

We were able to neutralize and contain the situation. We left without a single injury.

Preparedness isn’t always dramatic. Sometimes it’s knowing when not to act and when to act.
